The Northern Autism Network (NAN) was founded and shaped by individuals with both lived and professional experience within the Autistic and otherwise Neurodivergent community. What began as a grassroots effort, particularly an active Facebook group connecting over 1,200 members, evolved into a trusted platform for peer support, shared insight, and local information.
The original vision was to create "Safe Spaces" for our community. However, recognizing the diverse needs and rapidly evolving understanding within the neurodiversity field, NAN shifted towards creating "Brave Spaces." These spaces welcome diverse knowledge, backgrounds and experiences, fostering an environment where asking questions and learning without fear of shame is paramount. We know disconnect and misunderstandings can and do occur. We accept that change is too slow for some, and too fast for others. We are committed to reducing any harm while we work together towards a truly inclusive society. Our approach doesn't require neuronormative compliance but instead supports authentic Neurodivergent embodiment and communication.
2025 is a significant milestone, as we have become Northern Autism Network Incorporated, paving the way for future growth and charity status. This structural change reflects our deeper commitment to "re-engineering inclusion" from the ground up, ensuring that lived experience continues to shape all levels of decision-making.
Northern Autism Network Incorporated is led by a dedicated team with profound professional and lived experience within the Autistic and otherwise Neurodivergent community.
Together, through intentional peer support and with a neuroinclusive lens, we aim to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion. We explore possibilities where Autistic and otherwise Neurodivergent people can not only survive, but thrive and reach their true potential, advocating for better practical understanding of how services can be provided more effectively, how individuals can work and learn better, and emphasizing the creation of neuroinclusive systems, processes, and culture.
